| Email from Cliff
Judkins, Wed, 8
Jan 2003:
I dropped in for a visit
I was checking out your web site and thought I'd leave a
note. The LA
picked me up (high lined) from the mine sweeper "Embattle" on 19 June
1963.
LA was returning to CONUS for mothballing (I think). I bailed out of a
burning Marine fighter plane 600 miles west of Long Beach. I was pretty
banged up..16 broken bones and a collapsed lung. Your ship had a doctor
and a sick bay. Next day a Marine chopper came out and picked me up for
transfer to hospital ship "Haven" docked in Long Beach. Some of your
posters,
I see, were aboard during that time and might remember this. Anyway, it
was a good ship and I was treated great.
Cliff J. Judkins, former Marine captain and now an old
retired air line
pilot. "Non Sibi Sed Patriae"

Webmaster's comments: The above email is from the
pilot in the
June 21, 1963 Tribune article above. When his F8U-1 Crusader
caught
fire during aerial refueling, Cliff had to manually bail out of the
plane
(his ejection seat failed to work). Then, his parachute failed to
open and he fell to the ocean with the chute streaming above him.
Following his Marine Corps tour, Cliff retired after 30
years as a pilot
for Delta Air Lines. Since Cliff was aboard the USS LA, he has
been
added to our Visitor Log as #356. Welcome back aboard, Cliff.
